Jomarie Wasik was sworn in by Mayor Jackson in April of 2006 as the Director of Public Service. In January of 2011, as a result of reorganization, she now holds the position of Director of the newly formed Mayor’s Office of Capital Projects. She provides oversight of major public improvement projects with an annual capital budget of $110 million. It is her job to assure that the city’s major projects are delivered with high quality, on time and within budget.
Director Wasik extends a prolific civic career with the City of Cleveland. The first woman to control the Department of Public Service, Wasik has worked for the city since 1988. She began her work with the City of Cleveland that year as a Surveyor and was promoted to Chief Surveyor in 1991. In 1998, she was appointed Acting Commissioner of Engineering and Construction where she provided oversight of major road and bridge construction, prepared designs, plans, and specifications, and provided estimates of capital improvement costs and related services.
The following year, Wasik was named Administrator of Engineering and Planning, maintaining many of the duties she had while Acting Commissioner. In 2002, she was named Assistant Director of the Department of Public Service and assumed additional oversight and management responsibilities.
Before entering the public sector, Wasik was a Civil Designer with URS Consultants. As such, she prepared construction documents and site plans, performed related computations, drafted survey plats, and prepared legal descriptions for a variety of architectural and engineering projects.
Wasik is a board member of the American Public Works Association, a Past President of the Cleveland Chapter of Professional Land Surveyors of Ohio and was named the 2002 Surveyor of the Year. She is a 2001 graduate of the Cleveland State University Leadership Academy.
Wasik received her A.A.S. degrees in drafting and design technology, as well as in construction technology, from Stark Technical College in Canton, Ohio. She has been a registered land surveyor since 1985.
