Optimizing its recycling routes by using GIS software, the City of Cleveland has nearly doubled its recycling rate up to almost 11% in 2007. The City saved nearly $1 million by avoiding tipping fees.
Internal Recycling
The City of Cleveland maintains an internal paper-recycling program, which eliminates tons of paper from going to area landfills annually.
Commercial Recycling
The City’s Division of Waste Collection offers commercial recycling and waste collection restaurant operators and other commercial customers. -more
Construction and Demolition Waste
The City of Cleveland Division of Water requires at least 50% Construction & Demolition waste diversion for its capital improvement projects. This practice is being expanded and currently being adopted by other Departments.
Recycling Expansion
The City is exploring several options to bring recycling to both Downtown and the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.
Waste-to-Energy Feasibility Study
The City recently launched a feasibility study looking at waste-to-energy solutions and seeking to boost the amount of waste recycled from 11 to 70%. “Waste-to-energy” refers to treatment methods that create electrical or heat energy from waste.
