Chief Tracy Y. Martin

Tracy Y. Martin was appointed Chief of Education in April 2006. As liaison to the Cleveland Municipal School District and its board, Martin is focused on advancing Mayor Frank G. Jackson’s vision for educational excellence for every child. She also stays engaged with members of the community to keep communication flowing.

Prior to joining the Jackson Administration, Martin spent nearly 13 years with the Cleveland Municipal School District (CMSD). She began her work there as an elementary school teacher and was able to collaborate with her school principal to develop instructional goals and strategies as well as work with other teachers to support professional development.

Martin later used her strong administrative skills as a District Strategy Manager for CMSD’s Cornerstone Literacy Professional Development Program, a literacy development initiative for grades K–3. She had oversight of four schools and a budget of $280,000. She then assumed the role of Senior Executive of Academic Affairs and developed special academic projects with and for the district’s CEO.

Concurrent with those last two posts, Martin also served as a Supervising Superintendent for CMSD. She supervised, collaborated with, and mentored principals and staff members of 14 K–8 schools. She provided professional development materials, training, guidance, and direction to cultivate a coherent instructional program.

Martin received her bachelor’s of science degree in elementary education from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, and her master’s of education degree in administration supervision, magna cum laude, from John Carroll University. She is a member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) and is certified by the state of Ohio as an Administration Supervisor, Elementary Principal, and Professional Elementary Teacher.
