Cleveland Board of Zoning Appeals Weekly Agenda

MISSION

To interpret the City’s zoning code and to hear appeals from administrative actions and orders.

The five-member board hears and decides all appeals and zoning decisions made by City officials. The Board is empowered by the City Charter to grant, refuse, or revoke the required permits issued by the Commissioner of Building and Housing or any other administrative officer. The staff function is to prepare case data for hearing purposes and to maintain City records of zoning variations granted.

The board’s work is divided into two primary areas: Permits & Cases and Appeals Review & Records Maintenance.

PERMITS & CASES

Permits and Cases concentrates on fairly and objectively hearing and deciding on cases involving the interpretation of the City’s zoning code and any appeal of an administrative action brought before it. It hears testimony by applicants, City officials, and members of the public regarding the appeals of zoning code interpretations or any other administrative action and adjudicates each case.

OHIO BASIC BUILDING CODE REVIEW

Ohio Basic Building Code Review focuses its work on fairly and objectively hearing and deciding cases involving the Ohio Basic Building Code. Its activities include hearing testimony, interpreting the OBBC, and adjudicate each case before the Board at its bimonthly meeting.

APPEALS REVIEW
AND RECORDS MAINTENANCE

Appeals Review and Records Maintenance maintains high standards of code interpretation and administration of the City’s zoning code and detailed records of the proceedings of the Board of Zoning Appeals as required by the Charter and the laws of the state of Ohio. Its activities include:

  • conducting weekly interdepartmental staff review of all code-related cases;
  • meeting with applicants and affected City officials;
  • recommending actions to the Board;
  • maintaining minutes and case files for all appeals; and
  • commencing conversion of records to digital form.
