The provisions for private swimming pools are detailed in Section
115 and Appendix B of the Ohio Residential Code, which has been
adopted as part of the Cleveland Building Code. The highlights of
those requirements are as follows:
A permit is required for swimming pools containing
more than 1500 gallons of water or more than 24 inches in depth.
Prepare four (4) copies of a plot plan, neatly drawn to scale,
showing the position of the pool in relation to buildings and
lot lines and existing or proposed fence. Plans must be submitted
for approval (Room 505 in City Hall) PRIOR to installation.
An approved fence, at least 4 four feet high, or other protective
device with lockable gates shall secure the pool area.
The method of filtering, dis-infection and bacterial treatment
to be used shall be specified on the permit application and
approved by the Department of Public Health.
The pool shall be located in such a manner that it does not
create a nuisance for adjoining property owners.
No wall of the swimming pool shall be located within 10 feet
horizontal distance to any overhead electrical conductor (wire).
All electrical equipment or conductors in pool area including
filter pump must be protected by UL listed ground-fault circuit
interrupters.
All electrical receptacles, lighting fixtures and switching
devices on the property must be located a minimum of 10 feet from
the walls of the pool.
A separate permit is required for all new electrical work.
