CITY OF CLEVELAND
DIVISION OF BUILDING AND HOUSING
Electrical Permits
Why do I need an Electrical permit?
Electrical permits are required whenever changes
are made to the electrical systems in a dwelling or commercial
building. This includes the installation of electrical service
(remodeled or upgraded), panels, devices, additional circuits,
etc.
An electrical permit gives the property owner and
contractor formal approval to start an electrical project. It
provides for inspection of work, by certified inspectors, during
various stages of completion e.g. rough in and final. These inspections
assure that all work is completed according to state Electrical
codes.
When do I need an Electrical permit?
Permits are required prior to commencing the work.
Who gets the Electrical permit?
Homeowners can apply for Electrical permits by completing
the permit application and along with the Homeowner's Affidavit
stating that the owner or a family member will complete the work
without compensation.
Electrical Contractors, registered with the City
and licensed by the State, must apply for a permit after a contract
for work has been executed.
The State of Ohio Department of Commerce must license
persons other than the owner, while the City of Cleveland registers
these persons to do work in Cleveland. To be registered, the contractors
must also have current copies of their company liability insurance
and contractor's compliance bond on file with Contractor's Registration
Section in Room 505 of City Hall.
If you're not sure if a contractor is registered,
