An automated waste-collection Pilot Program has begun for 15,000 Cleveland residents. The new system is significantly more efficient and user-friendly, and should encourage more participation in recycling, since items can be recycled curbside.
Through this program, residents receive sturdy garbage carts for trash and recycling which can be wheeled to the curb. Collection vehicles equipped with mechanical arms (photo) grasp, lift, and empty the carts into the trucks and then return them to the curbs- all without the operator leaving the cab.
Benefits that have been enjoyed by other communities utilizing similar systems are:
- An increase in the amount of materials recycled
- Fewer problems with animals, since the carts have tight-fitting lids
- Less physical demands on citizens as well as city workers
- Neater neighborhood appearance, with the uniform look of the carts
- Monetary savings- according to the Environmental Protection Agency, this efficient system takes one third as many labor hours
The new collection program will eventually be city-wide. Residents will receive postcards and brochures regarding the program prior to receiving their new carts. Normal scheduled pick-up dates will not be affected. Residents can see the Frequently Asked Questions publication, or call the Division of Waste at 216.664.3717 for further information.
