Cleveland Public Power vows to maintain system if Local 39 wages a work stoppage

CLEVELAND, May 15, 2006 - Cleveland Mayor Frank G. Jackson and the management staff of Cleveland Public Power regretfully announce that Cleveland Public Power employees represented by the International Brotherhood of Electric Workers Local 39 presented the City with a 10-day Strike Notice this afternoon.

If a settlement is not reached between the parties, Local 39 will go on strike at 7:00 a.m., May 25, 2006.

While the work stoppage will alter the normal course of business, Cleveland Public Power officials have instituted a Strike Plan which will result in the continued operation of Cleveland's most reliable electric utility. "Let me assure the customers and residents of the City of Cleveland that Cleveland Public Power will maintain its system," said Mayor Jackson.

Julius Ciaccia, Public Utilities Director explained that crews will be working 24 hours a day to respond to any issues regarding the system from replacing street lights to maintaining feeders and substations. "Cleveland Public Power will work to minimize any negative effects that a work stoppage would have on its rate payers. Our customer service information line will be operational and maintained as usual. For anyone experiencing electrical problems they can call 216-664-3200 and expect to be served," explained Director Ciaccia.

He continued, "Cleveland Public Power is working diligently to improve the system, the way in which we conduct business and to maintain the strong, safe and reliable service we provide to our commercial and residential customers."
