“We know that we will not tolerate violence in our community but we must also give voices to our young people so they can take their own stand against violence. We must help to create opportunities for them to be successful,” says Mayor Jackson. “These events can strengthen our communities and allow young people to make a difference in Cleveland.”
Information about summer job opportunities, work experience programs, and a chance to apply for them will be available. The festivals will also include a Gang & Youth Peace Summit to promote nonviolence and Parental Support Groups that parents, as well as youths, are invited to attend.
The events will target youth interests with an Open Mic contest, a Talent Show, and a Design Contest to come up with a theme for One Voice…Zero Tolerance. Contest winners will have the opportunity to perform at festivals around the City, appear on public television, and receive studio time.
Transformation U and the Summer Youth Festivals are a collaborative effort of Mayor Frank G. Jackson's One Voice…Zero Tolerance Initiative, Cleveland Department of Parks, Recreation & Properties, Cleveland Community Relations Board, Cleveland Empowerment Zone, Cleveland Division of Workforce Development, Cleveland Municipal School District, Cuyahoga Board of County Commissioners, YO Cleveland, and Youth Opportunities Unlimited.
